Spring is the perfect time to open the windows, clear out the clutter, and start fresh. As you begin spring cleaning, it’s a great opportunity to be mindful about where your unwanted items end up. With a little planning, you can keep usable items in circulation, help others in your community, and recycle what can’t be reused.

Winter can be one of the trickiest times of year for recycling. Between snow, ice, and shorter days, recycling drop-offs can feel more cumbersome, and some recyclables may even become unusable due to moisture or freezing temperatures. Cardboard, in particular, is highly vulnerable during the winter months. However, we don’t stop creating waste during the winter and our responsibility to recycle continues through the colder months.

Winter composting is entirely possible — you just need to know a few tricks to keep your microbes happy and warm.
